

According to Dr Sharib:
According to Dr Sharib: "Al-Hayy is the One Who is free from (above)
comprehension and perception. According to some scholars Al-Hayy is
the One Who performs all acts and understands the implications of them
all. Allah is above mortality, death or extinction. He who does not
understand and does not perform any work is dead indeed."
To emulate the name we are advised to take to self-surrender. We
should become as if we are a dead body in the hands of those giving a
funeral bath.
Appropriate recitation or use prevents a person from falling ill.

Al-Ghazali says: "Al-Hayy - The Living One - is both agent and
perceiver....the lowest level of perception involves the one ....being
conscious of itself, for what is not conscious of itself is inanimate and
dead. But the perfect and absolute living thing is one under whose
perception all perceived things are arranged, as are all existing things
under its activity so that no perceived thing escapes its knowledge and
no action its activity, and that is God, .......for He is the absolutely living
one."

His (Khawaja Uthman Harooni's ) advice was one word advice and that
was - "Live!" To live is one thing and to exist is another thing. There are
so many people, rather unfortunate people, who do not live but merely
exist. To exist means a man is breathing but to live is different. He
exhorted the people that living required....that a man should not have his
own personal interest in view but be interested in others....it is by one's
own serious efforts that he comes to live....'
So many people have been thinking that they are living but they have not
shown the signs of organism and growth, which means they have not
been helpful to others.

Disregarding technical medical definitions for the moment, the word
'living' in the context of human development implies growth, activity,
exploration, the search for mastery, alertness, interest, sustained effort,
motivation, and enthusiasm for all that surrounds - the human and the
non-human environment. It implies the individual receives stimuli, actively
processes them, imagines various responses, selects appropriate ones,
and enacts them in such a way that he or she changes or transforms the
environment and thereby themselves. Such a process is commensurate
with, and in some respects even defines, health.
However the term ' better living' used by Dr Sharib implies not only this,
but also that the transformations effected in the environment are aimed
at good and just ends, and that the means are morally sound - having in
view more than immediate self interest.
The hedonist seeks to live by means of the pursuit of his or her own
sensory gratification, but this becomes subject to the law of diminishing
returns and drags the individual into a downward spiral - seeking ever
baser means to this end. The same can be said in relation to the pursuit
of worldly power.
The spiritual aspirant however aims to live by means of serving and
gaining the pleasure of the Living God, through working for the welfare of
mankind. This leads to a virtuous spiral and new heights of living not
understood by those encompassed by selfishness.
