According to Dr Sharib:

"Al-Muhyi is the One Who gives life and also the soul to everyone. In His hands
are life and death."

To emulate the name we are advised to have no will of our own but to be
directed by the divine will, and to imbibe the spirit of self-surrender.

Appropriate recitation saves one from prison.

How He gives life
To the earth after
Its death: verily the Same
Will give life to the men

Has power over all things.

Al-Ghazali says that this name concerns bringing into existence - when bringing
life into existence is the object, it is called animation. None gives life but God.

(Al-Ghazali - The Ninety-nine Beautiful Names of God. Trans. Burrel/Daher: ITS: 1992.)

The miracles of Lord Jesus in restoring life demonstrate the power of God over
life.Twentieth century scientific research has identified much detail concerning
the physical processes by which a single fertilised cell divides and subdivides,
and then under chemical instruction from their nuclei begins to form cells with
increasingly complex and specialised functions. The DNA within the cell
nucleus has been identified by scientific methodology as a twin helix on which
are located the various chemical constituents - 'the building blocks of life'.

Though all developments rely on the chemical matrix some combine to form
more complex structures. Some of these structures of the body function with
only vegetal like actions, others acquire independent movement, and others
such as the brain acquire consciousness, perception, and control. It is by this
means that the soul acquires a physical existence or life, and by this process
that matter becomes animated or alive.

As well as the physical processes this life is identified by Shah Wali Ullah as a
subtle body called the 'Nasmah'. (See also 'Al-Mumit'). According to him the
separation of the Nasmah from the physical body occurs at death and results
in its weakening but it is then given a new life by Divine Providence as is
referred to in the passage from the Holy Qur'an above. This new life enables it
to speak and hear and see and function without the physical body.

Some say that refinement occurs during the life of the body in some souls
(resulting sometimes in minute changes in the body such as development of
the size of the pineal gland ) - developing faculties that become aware of the
(rational) soul itself, which remains with God, Who in Reality creates and
controls every aspect of every phase of every process however minute or
large. This lies outside of the realm that physical sciences can fathom by
research or speculation.
