According to Dr Sharib:
"Al-Hafiz is the One Who protects and saves things from decay and
destruction. The name also means and implies to be safe and to be
protected."
"To emulate the name you should try to protect your heart from the love
of the world and also from lust, greed, and other spiritual ailments."
Appropriate recitation of the name affords protection from fear, from
enemies and even from wild animals.

Some other references:
Al-Ghazali refers to the All-Preserving in two ways.
One - as sustaining things for the length of their existence. God
preserves man from the destructive external threats by, for instance,
giving him 'spies' (eyes and ears) to warn him, hands and arms and
weapons to defend himself, and legs to run away from danger. In all the
fields of the physical and natural world He in marvelous ways does a
similair thing.
Two - as sustaining in things the balance between inimical elements i.e.
hot and cold, wet and dry etc. Every particularised element however
small ( even a drop of water) has angels assigned to its protection until it
reaches its resting place - operating through an intention inherent in that
element's essence. This is not theoretical, it has been described through
the means of interior vision, by those who possess insight.

Hafiz (present participle of the verb hafaza, "to protect, preserve and by
extension to memorise). One who has memorised the Qur'an.

Hazrat Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi says of the Mesnevi, in the introduction
to book one:-
"None shall touch it except the purified. Falsehood doth not approach it
either from before or behind, since God observes it and watches over it,
and He is the best Guardian and He is the Most Merciful of them that
show mercy."
Encircling ourselves with positive thoughts of kindness, tolerance, trust
in God, justice, moderation, humility, faith, love, hope, belief, charity,
submission, peace, generosity, purity, benevolence, wisdom, gratitude,
and compassion, guards us against the mischief caused by negative
thoughts. Curbing our heart from following it's baser passions, and our
bodily soul from excessive indulgence of its appetites, guards us from
the surrounding hostile forces that may seek to destroy the harmony of
our life. This is a great help.
